The Full Moons In May

We are officially entering May 2026, and this month, we aren’t getting just one full moon; we’re getting two.  The first full moon arrives on Friday, May 1, reaching peak illumination at 1:23 P.M. EDT. Traditionally known as the Flower Moon, its name honors the explosion of blossoms across North America as spring truly takes hold.

The Flower Moon arriving on May 1st in Scorpio carries a profound spiritual resonance of manifestation and full-bloom potential. Occurring at the height of spring, this lunar event symbolizes the transition from the internal “planting” of intentions to the external “flowering” of results. It is a period of high fertility—not just in nature, but in our personal projects and spiritual growth—urging us to acknowledge the beauty that has grown from our winter struggles. Spiritually, the flower moon serves as a celestial reminder to practice gratitude and abundance, encouraging us to lean into our passions and allow our truest selves to be seen in their most vibrant, unapologetic colors. Consistent with its name, it is a time for “blossoming” out of old habits and stepping into a season of renewed energy and purpose.

The saying “once in a blue moon” exists for a reason—it doesn’t happen often. By definition, a Blue Moon is the second full moon to occur within a single calendar month.  On Sunday, May 31, at 4:45 A.M. EDT, the moon will complete its cycle for the second time in 30 days. Like its sibling at the start of the month, this will also be a Micromoon. Having two Micromoons in one month is an astronomical rarity that makes this May particularly special for photographers and telescope enthusiasts. The Blue Moon on May 31st serves as a powerful spiritual bookend, representing a rare moment of clarity and cosmic “bonus” energy. Because a second full moon in a single month is an astronomical rarity, it is often viewed as a spiritual portal for breakthroughs and the completion of cycles that the first moon of the month initiated. While the Flower Moon was about the initial bloom, the Blue Moon is about refinement and long-term vision; it asks us to look beyond our immediate desires and tap into our deeper, “once in a blue moon” aspirations. Falling in the adventurous sign of Sagittarius in 2026, this moon encourages a spirit of truth-seeking and expansion, urging you to release any lingering baggage from the month so you can step into June with a sense of liberated purpose and a broader perspective on your life’s journey.
